55: Brother

On a dark April night when I was nine, my aunt arrived hurriedly. Mom and dad rushed out the door. There were confusion and excitement and fear, and tears of uncertainty. I remember standing at the old front door, being consoled in a way I’d never experienced.

The next day, I had a baby brother.

  2. I loved that this ended happily (I hope--because there were times I wished all my siblings away!). When I was three, my baby sister was born and my Mom held her up at the hospital window and I wondered (at the time) why everyone was fussing over a blanket! :)

  5. It's rather an overwhelming event when you're a child--the circle around you realigns, and that is scary. Great 55!

  6. Oh,yes! How intense those feelings at the age of nine. I remember right where I was and what I was doing at the age of nine when my mother told me she was pregnant with what would turn out to be a baby brother. Funny....I thought I was so old.

    Thanks for the memory!

  8. So descriptively told, and I loved that you obviously remember exactly how you felt and kept the memory pure in your writing. So, is the picture of your now-grown brother?

  9. Did you try to send him back? I tried sending mine back but he was already into his 30's by then so I sent him to St. Louis instead. I liked this, good arc in the telling.
